Give Yourself a Fright with these Dark Comedies
Give Yourself a Fright with these Dark Comedies
During this ghoulish time of year, we're celebrating our dark comedies. These titles cover a lot of spooky topics: bloodthirsty demons, toxic waste, dystopian corporations, teen angst, vengeful barbers, dinner parties and other frights!
Cry-Baby
Bad boy Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker and square rich girl Allison are star-crossed lovers in this satire fueled by hormones and rock and roll. A rebellious teen comedy, Cry-Baby a jumping, jiving Tony nominee from the writers of Hairspray with a rockabilly score from the co-founder of Fountains of Wayne and the executive producer of "The Daily Show."
Evil Dead The Musical
Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s all up to our hero Ash and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Evil Dead The Musical takes all the elements of the cult classic films The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 and combines them for one of the craziest, funniest, and bloodiest theatrical experiences of all time.
The Toxic Avenger
Melvin Ferd, the Third, wants to clean up Tromaville, the most polluted town in New Jersey. Foiled by the mayor's bullies, Melvin is dumped into a vat of radioactive toxic waste, only to reemerge as The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey's first superhero. Our hero is out to save New Jersey, end global warming, and woo the librarian in town (no, not like The Music Man).
Urinetown
Winner of three Tony Awards and more, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. In a Gotham-like city suffering a terrible water shortage, "it's a privilege to pee!" The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Full of comic mayhem and heart, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown centers on Pepa, whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980s Madrid. Along with Pepa, there's her missing (possibly philandering) lover, Ivan; his ex-wife of questionable sanity, Lucia; their son, Carlos; Pepa's friend, Candela and her terrorist boyfriend; a power-suited lawyer; and a taxi driver who dispenses tissues, mints and advice in equal proportion.
