In Memoriam: Don Schlitz

American songwriter, composer, Grammy Award winner, and MTI author Don Schlitz passed away on April 16, 2026. He was 73 years old. Schlitz was the composer for the 2001 Broadway musical and MTI title The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, based on the Mark Twain novel. The show was nominated for two Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards. Schlitz's work has left a lasting impact on country music.

As a songwriter, Schlitz enjoyed his first success with "The Gambler," which became a country hit when Kenny Rogers made it the title track of his sixth album in 1978. For Rogers, "The Gambler" was a definitive hit and enduring classic. The song won Schlitz the Grammy Award for Country Song of the Year in 1978. In 2018, "The Gambler" was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress. Schlitz wrote numerous songs for other country artists like John Denver, Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks, and Reba McEntire. Among those hits was the romantic ballad "Forever and Ever, Amen," performed by Randy Travis.

In addition to being a two-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter and a member of the Grand Ole Opry, Shlitz was impressively an inductee to four halls of fame: the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.

Don Schlitz's contributions to the world of music leaves a beautifully varied legacy, and both he and his work will be remembered with reverence and love.
