It certainly doesn't suck to be the cast, crew, and creative team of the Brazilian production of AVENUE Q! The show has recently been nominated for five Shell Awards (there are only eight categories). The most prestigious theatre awards in Brazil, the Shell Awards don't have separate categories for plays and musicals; this is the first time both the Best Actor and Best Actress categories contain nominees from a musical. For the nominators to deem the work of two musical theatre actors to be on par with those in straight plays speaks volumes to the strength of their performances. Also particularly notable are the nominations of Chris Moeller (Best Direction) and Claudio Botelho (a special award for adapting the lyrics into Portuguese). Over their 15 year history of working together, Moeller and Botelho are responsible for 25 Brazilian productions of Broadway shows and original Brazilian shows, have earned over six Shell Award nominations, and have each won three times. Last year, they were given a special award for their integral role in developing Brazilian theatre.
The nominees are:
Best Actor: Andre Dias (Princeton/Rod)
Best Actress: Sabrina Korgut (Kate/Lucy)
Best Lighting Design: Paulo Cesar Medeiros
Best Direction: Charles Moeller
Special Award for Portuguese Lyrics Translation: Claudio Botelho
